As I’ve tried to figure out what it means to live my life informed by God and my faith, I have turned to several different spiritual practices. One practice I appreciate is Spiritual Direction. I meet with my spiritual director every month via Skype and she sits with me and helps me notice what God is up to in my life.
Someone recently asked me what my definition of spiritual direction is and I came up with the term Soul Storying. Here are definitions of “soul” and “storying.”
Soul: Your soul is the part of you that consists of your mind, character, thoughts, and feelings. Many people believe that your soul continues existing after your body is dead.
Storying: The action of telling a story or stories.
I like to think of spiritual direction as Soul Storying because through the process of spiritual direction, we are noticing where God is at work and we are making space for our soul stories. I love using the verb “storying” because it is an active word. God is always telling stories, and we are always telling stories. My hope is that we will give more attention to the stories God tells and the stories our souls tell.
Soul Storying will be a place where I explore spiritual direction and spiritual practices. I am applying to a spiritual direction certification program next spring, so I will also write about that process here.
Thanks for joining me!
